Russian President Vladimir Putin toured key domestic aviation facilities, stepping inside the cockpit of the newly modified MC-21-310 medium-haul airliner. The inspection marks a high-profile milestone in Moscow’s push to showcase its fully import-substituted passenger aircraft. Built entirely without Western components, the airliner represents Russia’s bid for total operational independence in civil aviation following years of international trade restrictions.

Eliminating Western Vulnerabilities in Domestic Aviation

The original design of the MC-21 relied heavily on foreign supply chains, utilizing American Pratt & Whitney engines, foreign avionics, and imported composite airframe materials. However, sweeping international sanctions abruptly cut off access to these critical components. In response, state defense conglomerate Rostec and aircraft builder Yakovlev executed a complete design overhaul to achieve full domestic substitution.

Engineers replaced foreign propulsion with domestic Aviadvigatel PD-14 turbofans while integrating Russian-made flight navigation systems, auxiliary power units, and braking systems. Furthermore, the aircraft’s advanced composite wings are now manufactured entirely with Russian-developed materials and resin curing technologies.

Flight Testing and the Path to Commercial Service

During his tour, President Putin highlighted the critical importance of self-reliance in aerospace engineering to safeguard the country’s transportation infrastructure. Test models of the import-substituted MC-21-310 have already passed key performance benchmarks, including long-range flights carrying simulated passenger payloads and single-engine failure takeoff safety tests.

While replacing hundreds of foreign components delayed original commercial timelines, intense flight-testing programs continue to build the necessary type certification dossier. State officials aim to complete final certification as the aircraft prepares for commercial rollout. Ultimately, the MC-21-310 serves as the flagship vessel in Russia’s long-term strategy to replace aging Boeing and Airbus fleets on domestic flight routes.
