Thai authorities have detained a 46-year-old Australian man on suspicion of murder after the body of a 17-year-old Thai girl was discovered stuffed inside a suitcase near a railway line in the resort city of Pattaya.

The suspect, identified as Simon Carman from Ballarat, Victoria, was apprehended by immigration officials on Friday evening at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport while attempting to board a flight to Perth, Australia.

Timeline of Events

According to investigators, the victim, identified as 17-year-old Tunchanok Donhomla, was reportedly picked up by Carman from the Beach Road area in Pattaya. The alarm was initially raised on Friday afternoon when the teenager’s friends reported her missing.

Police officers tracing her final movements uncovered chilling CCTV footage that pieced together the events leading to the grim discovery:

  • Early Thursday (June 25): Security cameras captured Carman and the teenager entering a condominium in Pattaya together.
  • Hours Later: Separate CCTV footage allegedly showed Carman leaving the building alone. He was seen carrying a large, heavy black suitcase, which he subsequently loaded onto the back of a motorbike before riding away.
  • Friday (June 26): Police discovered the suitcase dumped beside railway tracks in Pattaya. Inside, they found the naked body of the teenager. Authorities reported that she had suffered a severe assault, noting heavy bruising to her face and obvious signs of violence.

Upon identifying Carman from the condominium footage, Pattaya police quickly alerted immigration officials, leading to his interception at the airport before he could flee the country.

Denials and Ongoing Investigation

While undergoing interrogation by Pattaya police, Carman vehemently denied any involvement in the teenager’s abduction and murder.

Police Colonel Anek Sarathongyu, head of the Pattaya City Police Station, stated that investigators strongly believe Carman is responsible for the crime. During questioning, officers noted that the suspect bore fingernail scratches on his body that were “consistent with a struggle.” When asked about specific marks on his neck in a video taken following his arrest, Carman allegedly blamed a spider bite.

Thai authorities are currently awaiting the results of a comprehensive post-mortem examination and the processing of additional forensic evidence before formally laying charges.

A police official noted that the charges pending against Carman are severe and could include:

  • Murder
  • Concealing a corpse
  • Child abduction
  • Abduction of a minor for sexual purposes

Diplomatic Response

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has acknowledged the arrest and confirmed they are providing standard consular assistance to Carman. Citing privacy obligations, the department declined to comment further on the ongoing legal proceedings.

The tragic incident comes at a time of heightened scrutiny in Thailand regarding the conduct of foreign nationals. In recent weeks, the Thai government has sharply reduced the length of visa-free stays for tourists following a series of high-profile arrests of foreigners involved in alleged drug offenses, trafficking, and illegal business operations.
