Specialized diving teams recently descended beneath the Mediterranean waters off the Italian coast to perform a crucial maintenance operation. Specifically, experts gave the iconic Christ of the Abyss statue its annual deep clean near San Fruttuoso. The 2.5-meter bronze monument rests at a depth of 17 meters on the seabed, where marine life and encrustations constantly build up on its surface. Therefore, conservationists coordinate this delicate preservation ritual every year to safeguard the historical artifact. Ultimately, this underwater effort ensures that the famous monument continues to inspire visitors and divers from around the world.

Protecting a Symbol of Remembrance and Sacrifice

The historic bronze monument has stood on the seafloor near Camogli and Portofino since August 1954. Sculptor Guido Galletti created the piece based on an idea by Italian diving pioneer Duilio Marcante. Crucially, the statue honors those who tragically lost their lives at sea. Furthermore, workers cast the monument using melted-down medals of fallen soldiers, ships, and cannons. Consequently, the sculpture serves as a powerful symbol of sacrifice and peace following World War II.

However, life beneath the waves continuously threatens the structural integrity of the bronze work. Over time, algae, barnacles, and various microorganisms settle inside the intricate folds of the statue’s sculpted robe. Previously, workers used metal wire brushes to scrape away the stubborn marine growth manually. Unfortunately, those aggressive mechanical methods caused significant lasting damage to the delicate bronze finish. Consequently, conservation experts changed their operational approach to prevent further surface erosion.

Modern Cleaning Techniques Safeguard the Bronze Finish

This year, specialized diving teams adopted a much gentler, high-tech restoration method. Instead of wire brushes, divers utilized specialized high-pressure seawater hoses to blast away buildup. By holding the nozzles 10 to 15 centimeters away from the statue, technicians safely dislodged algae and encrustations. Consequently, the pressurized water stream removes unwanted marine life without scratching or degrading the underlying metal.

Furthermore, multiple government agencies coordinated this complex underwater restoration mission. Divers from the Guardia di Finanza, Fire Brigade, Carabinieri, and Coast Guard participated in the operation. Working in shift rotations, these professional divers meticulously cleaned every inch of the sculpture. Now, the restored monument stands proudly once again in the crystal-clear waters of the Portofino Marine Park.
